Urban water locations

Living and working by the water

The Metropole Ruhr has over 572 kilometres of canal and river banks. More and more cities and communities in the region are starting to realise that their vast number of waterways are more than just a means of transport; they are also ideal for leisure with numerous companies keen to base their headquarters alongside the water. The ‘urban water locations’ project is supported by the Wirtschaftsförderung metropoleruhr GmbH (wmr) economic development agency and comprises a number of individual projects with one thing in common: they offer significant development potential thanks to their proximity to the water.

The Duisburg inland port is a flagship project. The success of the project has inspired neighbouring cities to focus on their own city ports as well as attracting numerous private developers. The urban water locations project covers 34 proposals ranging from the Rhine in Duisburg to the quay at the Datteln-Hamm canal, the banks of the Lippe in Dorsten and the banks of the Ruhr in Hagen, Hattingen and Mülheim an der Ruhr.

Economic and social structural changes in the Metropole Ruhr region are opening up new possibilities for these once industrial areas on all sides of the rivers, basins and canals in this conurbation. These former industrial buildings, sites and harbour areas now offer exceptional quality in terms of urban development, business and culture.

Support for sponsors by the wmr

The level of project development varies from site to site. This also applies to the sponsors involved. The Metropole Ruhr has more than 20 years’ experience in project management at such sites, as reflected by the fact that each individual project may last several years or adopt a medium-term approach.

The aim of the Wirtschaftsförderung metropoleruhr GmbH economic development agency is to support the ‘urban water locations’ project by providing project sponsors with on-site support and publicising the enormous potential of the location. The wmr also presents the urban water locations project at trade fairs such as the MIPIM in Cannes and EXPO REAL in Munich.
