Regional economic development is essential to the Ruhr district, one of Europe’s largest and most important economic areas. The aim of regional economic development programmes is to promote economic development in the Ruhr district and help find a solution to regional structural problems. The specific task is to take into account and bring together the interests of the various municipalities and devise a useful solution for promoting economic development in the Ruhr district and for solving economic problems in the region. Since 1 October 2004, the Regionalverband Ruhr (RVR) has replaced the Kommunalverband Ruhrgebiet association. This has brought with it new responsibilities such as regional economic development and the drawing up of master plans for the development of the region.
In order to meet the obligations of regional economic development, the Wirtschaftsförderung metropoleruhr GmbH (wmr) economic development agency was set up on 1 January 2007 as a 100% subsidiary of the RVR. The Ruhr district therefore has just one regional economic development entity and one address for relevant economic issues. All of the important players in the economic development of the Ruhr district are represented by the various advisory boards.
