Quality of life

Living in the Metropole Ruhr

What was once seen as a drawback, now increasingly offers strategic advantages: the poly-centrality of this conurbation. The heart of the Metropole Ruhr is no centralised city with a concentration of living, innovation and finance – instead it is composed of a group of cities and towns. 5.3 million inhabitants live in the region, 2.5 million of whom live at the heart of the conurbation. This area is composed of the urban districts of Duisburg, Oberhausen, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Bottrop, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Herne, Bochum and Dortmund. The East side is connected to the cities of Hamm and Hagen whereas the districts of Unna, Ennepetal, Wesel and Recklinghausen form the outer ring of the region.

‘Change through culture – culture through change’. The Metropole Ruhr impressed European judges with this motto and secured the title of Capital of Culture for 2010. The region is a vibrant centre of culture and is on the way to becoming a new creative metropolis within Europe. Yet this alone is not enough. Anyone who enjoys sport, leisure activities and a challenge will also find what they are looking for in the Metropole Ruhr. The area is characterised by its industrial past as well as being open to new things, as these past structures have now undergone huge changes.
