Kreis Unna

welcome to Unna

The district of Unna lies at the eastern edge of the Metropole Ruhr, joining with the two cities of Dortmund and Hamm to form the 'eastern Ruhr district' economic region. 420,000 people live in the district, which comprises eight towns and cities and two parishes, on an area of some 543 square kilometres. There are over six million people living within a radius of 60 km. To date there has been a positive growth of over 50,000 in the local population since 1975, a clear indication of the high level of the quality of life, work and living in the district of Unna. The favourable location of the district of Unna with its proximity to the five autobahns A1, A2, A 44, A 45 and A 443 enables short journey times both within the Ruhr district itself and into the recreational areas of Münsterland, Sauerland and the Soester Börde flatlands. Connection to the major waterways is provided for both freight shipping and pleasure craft via the Datteln-Hamm Canal, which passes through the towns of Bergkamen and Lünen.

Employment

Almost two thirds of jobs in the district of Unna are concentrated in the tertiary sector. Sectors of particular prominence include trading, communications and transport. Despite this, the largest industrial sector in the Unna district is the processing industry. Nevertheless, these figures and the developments that they represent are a clear indication of the structural transition of the region. The district of Unna is undergoing a process of continual development as an up-and-coming, significant location for technology and services.

Active structural transformation

Since it was founded in 1961 the business development agency for the district of Unna has played an active part in shaping the structural transformation in the region. Over 550 businesses with well over 32,000 jobs have now been created and/or retained. Key branches in the district include logistics, engineering, life sciences, energy and disposal and recycling technology.

Logistics – a sector with a promising future

[+]

Business competitiveness is characterised by strong growth in the worldwide flow of goods and is affected to a significant extent by the efficiency of logistics. This means that the logistics sector is a decisive success factor for companies in the markets. The significance of the sector is reflected in the district of Unna, over 11,000 employees liable for social security contributions are currently employed in over 400 companies of the logistics branch.

The basis for the success of the Unna district include the strategically favourable location at the eastern edge of the Ruhr district and the outstanding offer available for logistics space and superb transport infrastructure.

Four autobahn intersections meet in the district of Unna alone (Kamener Kreuz, Dortmund-Unna, Unna-Ost and Westhofener Kreuz), uniting the most significant north-south and east-west axes with one another. In addition, the key rail and inland waterway routes of the region also traverse the district. In this respect, the municipal harbour at Lünen, on the Dattel-Hamm Canal, is of particular importance. Since 1967 the port has been one of the key connections to the major ARA ports (Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Antwerp) and the north German ports. It offers a broad range of services, from the pure transshipment of goods to combined transport, warehousing and consignment. The business development agency has also made considerable efforts to integrate the commercial sites of the district into the rail network where possible, incorporating intelligent transport systems. The RuhrOst logistics centre, along with the container terminals in Bönen and Unna, make up a pioneering project for the combined-transport of goods. At the goods junctions of Unna and Bönen, freight from lorries can be loaded and unloaded onto rail transport. In addition, Dortmund Airport, situated directly on the western border of the district, enables the transportation of both passengers and freight, thus completing the comprehensive transport offer available in the region.

Engineering

Integrated automation processes are a decisive competitive factor in all branches of industry because they contain a great potential for value creation. This theme is the major factor in production and service activities in the district of Unna and the East of the Ruhr district. The Factory Automation Competence Centre aims to strengthen the innovative powers and international competitiveness of companies. The project is primarily directed at businesses active in engineering, measuring and control technology and electrical engineering. With the Factory Automation Competence Centre the business development agency of the district of Unna has sent an important signal. Modern companies require modern, innovative conditions if they are to act successfully in the global markets. The primary objective of the Factory Automation Competence Centre  has been achieved with the Netzwerk Industrie RuhrOst e.V. (NIRO) – namely the establishment of a sustainable corporate network in the eastern Ruhr region. NIRO is a network of companies for companies, with the additional involvement of universities, chambers of trade and industry, associations and economic development bodies. The goal of the partners is to strengthen the economic and technological efficiency and potential of the engineering and industrial electronics sectors.

Life sciences

One of the key goals of research into life sciences has long been to understand the marvels of nature in all their fascinating complexity. New mysteries are unravelled on a daily basis. There are many possible applications for life science research, not only in medicine, but also in foodstuff technology, for example. The advances currently being made make the life sciences one of the largest knowledge and growth markets at this time, with numerous associations, networks, forums and interdisciplinary centres creating synergies. Life science also offers great potential for ecology and environmental technology, where chemical and biotechnical investigations and processes are contributing to consumer protection and food safety.

As a consequence of this, the Bio-Security competence centre was established in the Am Mersch industrial and trading estate. It is unique in the world. By networking strong market partners and state-of-the-art research establishments the competence centre aims to make an important contribution to improving the quality of food and drink, as well as protecting consumer interests in the future. On a site of 10,000 sq. metres firms from the fields of agricultural engineering technology, sensorics, material and surface technology, microsystems technology, veterinary medicine, telematics, quality assurance etc. have established themselves. Overall, a total of 1,000 jobs are set to be created with the creation of the centre.

The health sector strengths of the district of Unna are not limited to the pharmaceutical production that takes place there. Together with the pharmaceuticals industry, companies in the fields of medical materials manufacturing, equipment and facilities, prosthetics and rehabilitation, health logistics and trading with rehabilitation equipment, laboratory equipment and accessories are all helping to reinforce the position of the district as a centre of equipment and supplies for the health sector in the Ruhr district. With the integration and reorientation of the IT and logistics strengths of the district to meet the requirements of medical supply the district of Unna offers ideal prerequisites for the further expansion of this position.

Disposal and recycling technology

The district of Unna and the town of Lünen in particular has embarked on a path of growth with respect to disposal and recycling. In order to strengthen and extend these growth areas, public and private businesses such as Remondis, Norddeutsche Affinerie, Innovatherm and also the society for waste management and disposal of the district of Unna have set up an association called Wirtschaftsförderungszentrum Ruhr für Entsorgungs- und Verwertungstechnik e.V., a business development centre for waste disposal and recycling technology. Its headquarters are in Lünen.

Leisure and relaxation

[+]

The district of Unna enjoys a green location, with industrial culture meeting the attractive landscapes typical of the region. In the north there is a flowing interblend with the park landscape of the Münsterland, to the south the district already has one foot in the wooded hills of the northern Sauerland. Between the Lippe in the north and the Ruhr in the south lies the fertile plain of the Börde. The district of Unna is extremely popular as an attractive recreational area, with many options for sporting activity. For example, the region can be explored via numerous cycle and hiking trails, with two golf courses providing ample opportunity to improve that handicap. Extensive canoeing trips on the Ruhr or sailing on the Datteln-Hamm Canal offer further opportunities for relaxation. In addition, the district of Unna is also studded with cultural attractions. These include Castle Cappenberg in Selm with its regular exhibitions, or Haus Opherdicke in Holzwickede with its moat and wonderful English garden. In the recent past star designer Colani also made his mark on the region: his ‘Ufo’ in Lünen, created from a former colliery tower, is now a characteristic symbol of the Lüntec Technology Centre - a "shining example" for the successful structural transition of the region.
