The growth of the region is reflected in the huge range of different products produced by the businesses in the district. Castrop-Rauxel, for example, is the headquarters of one of the largest and most respected research companies in Europe that test products in the pharmaceutical industry. One of the most important dairy companies in NRW has its headquarters in Dorsten. The water works in Haltern provide over one million people and the region's industry with water. A well-known producer of sausages and meat is located in Herten, as is an internationally well known producer of drinks. Chemicals manufacturers in Marl supply over 6000 products to no less than 110 countries all around the world; Oer-Erkenschwick is the site of the largest meat goods manufacturer in Germany.
Today the region has more people working behind desks than in heavy industry. Almost half of all people in work are now active in the service sector. Indeed, over 66% of the people working in the district's major town, Recklinghausen, are involved in services and trade. New structures and a variety of different branches are signs of the fresh start. There is a broad range of industries in the district: modern coal mining, the chemicals industry, engineering and plant engineering enjoy an equal status. But many young and innovative companies have been set up here or relocated to the region: these include companies in the areas of special engineering, medical technology, microelectronics, and measuring and control technology.
New markets have made the region a specialist in environmental protection and recycling. The first motor car recycling centre in North Rhine-Westphalia was constructed in Herten. Recklinghausen is the headquarters of the world's leading producer of cylinder co-ordinate systems. The largest producer of asbestos-free disc brake pads, and the only supplier of patented two-storey tents also have their headquarters in Recklinghausen. Furthermore, the world's largest producer of rock wool insulating material is located in the district of Recklinghausen.
Nowadays the district of Recklinghausen presents itself as a workshop for the future with good chances for growth. In this ‘workshop’ the district concentrates first and foremost on one ‘raw material’: research. Several companies in the district of Recklinghausen are concentrating their efforts on transporting know-how from the universities and universities of applied sciences into the region: these include techno Marl, the Wiesenbusch innovation centre in Gladbeck, the Zukunftszentrum future centre in Herten and the Technologiezentrum am Europaplatz technology centre in Castrop-Rauxel.
The European Centre for Media Competence (ecmc) in Marl deals comprehensively with new media and their potential uses. The centre is one of the most ambitious projects in the NRW Federal Media Initiative, and will make a decisive contribution to extending the profile of Marl as a media town.
Qualification as a ‘raw material’ has been showing an upward tendency in the district of Recklinghausen for many years now. There are several reasons for the high proportion of graduates in the district of Recklinghausen. The district lies in the middle of the densest university topography in the whole of Germany. The universities of Dortmund, Bochum, Essen and Münster are only a few kilometres away. But Fachhochschule Gelsenkirchen (a university of applied sciences) is also an excellent address for potential students. It has a department in Recklinghausen, whose courses are particularly linked to the special strengths of business and industry in the Emscher-Lippe region. The new campus, which consists of three buildings grouped around a central square, caters for over 1000 students studying business law, business engineering, chemicals and material technology.
People can reach their destinations quickly and easily from all the towns in the district. Six autobahns (A2, A31, A42, A43, A45, A52) to and from all directions in Germany merge here. Furthermore a close network of major roads ensures that travellers have quick access to the Rhineland, the Ruhr district and Münsterland. The Vestische local transport authority has its headquarters in Herten. Its comprehensive services include 260 buses, featuring modern rapid transport buses. They transport a total of 54 million people per year. The district of Recklinghausen is part of one of the largest local authority transport alliances in Europe, the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR). There are also good preconditions for inland waterways transport. Europe's largest canal junction lies in Datteln. The Dortmund-Ems canal, the Datteln-Hamm canal, the Wesel-Dattel canal and the Rhine-Herne canal link the region to all the important business areas in Europe. But the region does not simply offer optimal traffic connections by land and water. People can also take off from the local airport at Marl-Loemühle, which is used by many commercial aircraft and business travellers.
Theatres here include the Europahalle in Castrop Rauxel, the Ruhrfestspielhaus in Recklinghausen, the theatre in Marl, the amphitheatre in Dorsten and other large municipal halls in towns within the district. From here orchestras and theatre companies set out on their tours: most prominent amongst them are the New Westphalian Philharmonic Orchestra and the Westphalian Federal Theatre in Castrop Rauxel. Recklinghausen is a vital component in the staging of the nationally-acclaimed Ruhrfestspiele. Classical music and jazz in a castle, folk music and festivals in a park or one of the cultural venues are further highlights in the cultural calendar. The district of Recklinghausen contains a huge variety of interesting and exciting museums. The four most prominent museums include the Glaskasten in Marl, the Westphalian Roman Museum in Haltern, the Westphalian Jewish Museum in Dorsten and the Icon Museum in Recklinghausen. The annual Adolf-Grimme (German television) award ceremony in Marl, including the Marl video prize, are also internationally important events. Young musicians will be particularly interested to know that the town of Marl invites the winners of the national young musicians’ competition to perform twice a year at their traditional ‘Marler Debüt’ concerts.
The district’s network of riding trails totals no less than 140 km. There are even more cycling tracks: around 600 kilometres of track crisscross the district. Aviation fans can get their money's worth at the gliding centre in Dorsten, and ‘right next door’ there is a starting point for hot-air balloons in the Marl suburb of Lenkerbeck. There are golf courses in Recklinghausen and in Castrop-Rauxel, a skating rink in Dorsten, a summer toboggan run in Haltern, a rollerskating rink in Datteln, a planetarium, a fencing club, underwater rugby, a skateboard track and a trotting course in Recklinghausen. The Wittringen leisure area with its moated castle is also worth a visit. And talking of water: Fans of water sport are also well catered for. There are over 1000 metres of natural sand at the Haltern Reservoir. Surfers and yachtsmen, canoeists and oarsmen have ideal training conditions on the canoe regatta course in Recklinghausen. In addition, Castrop-Rauxel and Dorsten each has its own marina on the canal.
The district of Recklinghausen has another plus. More than a quarter of the district is covered in woods and forests. At the heart of the Hohe Mark natural park lies Haltern, a lakeside town, 85% of which consists of green areas, with the largest natural reservoir in the whole of North Rhine-Westphalia. Furthermore the district of Recklinghausen contains the Haard, the largest unbroken area of woodland in the Ruhr district; it has large areas for recreation and relaxation, nature study paths and, in addition, camping sites on its borders. The towns of Castrop-Rauxel, Gladbeck and Marl also richly deserve their titles as ‘green industrial towns’. Romantic streams, meadows and woods, rivers and valleys, long stretches of hillside and a good network of hiking tracks are the major rural features in the district, and underline once again the high quality of life in the region.
