Gelsenkirchen: city of 1,000 opportunities

Football hasn't been the only success story of the 267,000-strong city of Gelsenkirchen in recent years. Following a profound transformation process, the city's industrial structure has clearly expanded. While the classic medium-sized companies innovatively continue longstanding traditions in the chemical, metal and automotive supply industries in the former "town of 1,000 fires", growth sectors featuring global players and up-and-coming young businesses have arrived, spearheaded by the solar industry (the "town of 1,000 suns") and the IT sector. Logistics companies are also benefiting from the ideal location and infrastructure of the former mining and steel-producing sites in this conurbation at the very heart of Europe. Small and medium-sized companies join the networks that are being launched, for example in the senior citizens and health industries.

Ideas and networks

The energy, chemical, water industry, metal processing, logistics, IT and health industries are sectors in which Gelsenkirchen has reached top rankings. Experts of the economy and specialist journals recently confirmed the great potential that the city has to offer in terms of dynamic values such as productivity and growth. These kinds of news bulletins are an additional incentive for the protagonists in Gelsenkirchen, who are aware of their leading market positions. The dynamics of structural change and the resulting openness to innovation is reflected by the wide range of think-tanks and networks, in which decision makers from industry, science and society promote a large number of positive developments.

Markets for future-oriented energies

[+]

Back in the early 1990s, Gelsenkirchen was one of the first cities in Germany to venture into the solar age. Today, the ‘Solar City – City of future-oriented energies of Gelsenkirchen" is internationally renowned and features two significant solar factories. The Dutch Scheuten Group operates one of the most modern production sites in Gelsenkirchen-Rotthausen, the relocation and expansion of its solar module production within the city is a clear indication of its commitment to Gelsenkirchen as a solar location.

The Science Park Gelsenkirchen with its fascinating architecture is situated close to the city centre on a former steelworks site and offers excellent working conditions and an ideal environment for companies in the future-oriented growth industries. The park focuses on technology-, expertise- and consultation-intensive sectors in the future-oriented energies, information technology and health sector industries. The technology centre was launched in 1995 and is a symbol of structural transformation, a sought-after ‘top address’, and an international communication platform for conferences, exhibitions and conventions.
