Essen earned this status in the 19th century and has continued to develop it. Around 24,000 employees work in the fields of production, distribution and supply of energy, as well as energy technology. Leading international energy groups such as RWE, E.ON Ruhrgas, RAG and Evonik Industries have their headquarters in Essen, and the city’s expertise in this sector is complemented by a large number of small and medium-sized companies, as well as a wide range of education and research facilities, such as the University of Duisburg-Essen, the Haus der Technik event and seminar centre, the Gaswärme Institute and the Kraftwerkerschule power plant school. A number of important energy industry associations, such as VGB PowerTech e.V. and the Industrial Energy and Power Industry Association (VIK) are based in Essen, and the international energy exhibition, E-world energy & water, is held annually at the Messe Essen exhibition centre.
Essen has developed into one of Europe’s leading locations for the environmental and water industries, its core competence focussing on water supply and wastewater management in conurbations. The major water industry associations, Ruhrverband, Emschergenossenschaft and Lippeverband, stand for a long tradition and first-rate expertise. Essen’s environmental industry sector concentrates on solutions for problems in areas such as soil conservation, the waste and recycling industry, clean-up operations, water pollution control and noise protection, with environmental technology another crucial sector.
With around 40,000 employees, the health sector is an important supplier of services and jobs in Essen. The city features a wide range of internationally renowned health facilities, among them the Essen Coronary Association, the Oncology Clinics Association (OKV), transplantation medicine, the Essen Stroke Model, the eye and hand surgery facilities, state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures in radiological prevention, and the new cross-clinic cardiology centre. Essen has one of Europe’s best – and fastest – emergency care systems. The city’s significance is underlined by a disproportionately high percentage of regional, national and international ‘patient tourism’. Public private partnership investments in medical research and care, such as the Erwin L. Hahn Institute for Magnetic Resonance Imaging or the West German Proton Therapy Center, have reinforced the sector significantly. Essen's reputation as a centre for health is further underscored by high quality congresses such as the Gesundheitskongress des Westens or the Mayo-Kongress, as well as FIBO, the leading international trade show for fitness, wellness and health.
Over 28,000 people are employed at software companies, internet agencies, telecommunications providers, advertising and communication agencies, publishers and printers, as well as in the audiovisual media of film, radio and television. The approximately 1,500 information and communication companies make the city an important focal point for the industry in North Rhine-Westphalia. Essen offers ideal conditions for these companies, such as access to highly-qualified staff. For example, the University of Duisburg-Essen offers pioneering, internationally compatible courses that address the growing requirements of the information and communication sector.
Small and medium-sized information and communication companies are also able to benefit from their proximity to the local industrial groups. In addition, Essen also offers outstanding infrastructure. Alongside high performance ‘data highways’ and modern computing centres the innovative high-speed broadband data network VDSL has also been established, enabling transmission rates of up to 50 Mbit /sec throughout the urban area.
Essen is a key location for the German customer service industry. Over 4,000 employees are currently active at 50 call centres in Essen, in in-house call centres or call centre agencies. Experts anticipate further, above-average growth rates in the field of Customer Relations Management (CRM) in the coming years. Essen has ideal opportunities as a corporate location. This was revealed in a corporate survey conducted by Call Center Akademie Essen ComIn Genius – one of the first academies of its kind in Germany, founded in 1997. Over 90 percent of the CRM companies located in the city would choose the location again if given the choice, the experts state. An association to reinforce this sector further has recently been established, Verein Call Center Essen e.V..
The field of design has a long tradition in Essen. The courses in Industrial Design and Communications Design have been featured in the Folkwang design tradition once more since 2007, taking place shortly at the Zollverein, with 600 students. The Design Zentrum Nordrhein-Westfalen presents the present and future of design in the former industrial architecture of the Zollverein, a World Heritage site. One of the leading international design competitions is also staged here, the red dot design award. The focus of further developments is upon the establishment of a "creative village" for designers and design-related companies and the conversion of the historic buildings into office space, gastronomy and showroom uses. Since 2007 Essen has played host to the Initiative Deutscher Designverbände, an amalgamation of all significant German design agencies.
With approximately 35.000 employees, Essen is a centre of the construction industry, with renowned, often globally-active construction companies such as HOCHTIEF AG and many different providers of construction and building services. Many of the major companies located in Essen, such as ThyssenKrupp AG and Evonik Industries, have combined their real estate activities into independent real estate companies. In addition, Essen also boasts many property services companies offering a broad range of highly-specialised services: facility management, software development, building services, financial services and architecture are just a few examples.
Essen is headquarters to numerous significant trading companies, such as Arcandor, Aldi Nord, Deichmann, Medion, Noweda, MAN Ferrostaal, Evonik Trading. In the Mülheim-Essen-Oberhausen trading region one fifth of all employees is employed in trading, in Essen a total of 38,000. Essen, with approximately 800 shops and department stores on a sales area of more than 300,000 square metres, is frequently referred to as “the shopping city”. The Limbecker Platz complex in the west of the city is a development known throughout Germany, with the planned completion of the second phase of construction in autumn 2009 it will offer a usable space of 70,000 square metres on three shopping levels, with space for 200 shops.
Essen is one of Germany’s leading education centres. Around 5,000 teachers are employed at 187 general education facilities and 12 vocational colleges, attended by over 89,000 students. More than 300 institutions and private companies complement the economic factor ‘education’, providing jobs for 16,500 employees, a number that continues to rise. Establishments supporting the broad education and training sector are the Campus Essen at the University of Duisburg-Essen with around 1,500 tutors, the Folkwang institute of higher education, the Education Park, the HdT House of Technology, the Krafwerkerschule power plant school, the BildungsCentrum der Wirtschaft education centre, the irebs-Immobilienakademie property academy, the RGS ECON - Ruhr Graduate School of Economics and the Zollverein School of Management and Design.
Two models enjoy role model character and are co-ordinated by Essener Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft mbH economic development agency: The Verein zur Förderung der Zusammenarbeit von Schulen und Wirtschaft Essen e.V., SWE for short, is an interface between schools and industry. ESE (European Schools Essen) is a non-profit organisation consisting of eleven state schools. Its aim is the promotion of vocationally-oriented training, flexibility and multilingual skills at school, increasing the students’ prospects in the employment market. Each individual school is certified ‘European School in North Rhine-Westphalia’ by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Essen and the Ruhr district, one of the most densely populated and diverse cultural landscapes worldwide, have been nominated European Capital of Culture 2010. Essen’s Aalto music theatre is one of the best opera houses in the German-speaking territories. The redesigned Philharmonie at the Saalbau is not only the home of Essen’s renowned philharmonic orchestra, but has also seen concerts by globally renowned orchestras. The Grillo theatre has been staging acclaimed plays since 1892. Located in a listed industrial building, the Colosseum is a venue for musicals. The internationally renowned Folkwang museum and the Villa Hügel, former residence of the Krupp family, attract large numbers of national and international visitors with sensational exhibitions. Another highlight is the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage site. Lake Baldeney, the Gruga park, a large number of sports facilities, and Essen’s green southern districts provide a wide range of options for leisure activities.
